Why more and more Americans with Slovak roots are discovering Slovakia

In recent years, the number of people from the United States who are rediscovering their Slovak roots and deciding to move to Slovakia has been increasing. The Slovak Living Abroad Certificate (SLA) plays a big role in this. It is estimated that up to 700,000 Americans are of Slovak origin, and many of them are now using this opportunity to reconnect with the country of their ancestors.

The SLA allows descendants of Slovaks to live, work, study or do business in Slovakia without the restrictions that apply to classic citizenship by descent. This is otherwise limited to only three generations back. Thanks to this, people whose families left Slovakia in the 19th or early 20th century can also apply for the certificate.

The program was originally created for Slovaks living in neighboring countries, but has gradually become global. Today, more and more people from North America, and especially the USA, are requesting it.

The process usually begins with finding evidence of Slovak origin – birth certificates, marriage certificates and family tree documents. The applicant must also demonstrate a connection to Slovak culture, for example through knowledge of the language or activity in expatriate associations.

The certificate is issued by the Office for Slovaks Living Abroad . It brings not only a symbolic connection to the homeland of one's ancestors, but also practical benefits - the holder can officially work, do business and live in Slovakia without additional permits.

After three years of permanent residence, SLA holders can apply for Slovak citizenship. For many, this is the path to obtaining a Slovak (EU) passport , which allows free travel and living in any country in the European Union.

Many Americans describe Slovakia as a peaceful, safe, and welcoming place that combines modern European life with traditional values. It is this combination of culture, history, and practical options that makes Slovakia increasingly attractive to people with roots in the country.

At the same time, the SLA naturally strengthens Slovakia's relations with the world. It is similar to the Polish "Card of the Pole", but is more open and focused more on preserving identity and culture than on political goals.

The growing interest in Slovakia among Americans shows how family migration stories are coming back to the beginning after generations. For many, it is an opportunity to get to know a country they have only heard about from their grandparents.

Applying for a certificate requires collecting official documents about your ancestors, proof of cultural ties, and an official application. Many are assisted by Slovak associations operating abroad.

The certificate is recognized along with identity documents and is often the first step towards long-term residence and subsequently citizenship. This is why it is becoming a popular choice for people who want to return to Slovakia not only symbolically but also practically.

SLA is thus a bridge between Slovakia and its compatriots around the world. It allows us to turn family history into a real opportunity and at the same time enriches Slovakia with new experiences and perspectives of people who have decided to once again become part of the land of their ancestors.
